Have you ever wondered why the left hand, 4th finger is the traditional place to wear an engagement ring? What makes that specific spot so special? In order to answer that question we have to take a dive into history and study the ancient Romans. If you weren't already thinking about the roman empire every day, here's your excuse to do so now.

In ancient Rome there was a belief that a singular vein went from your heart, all the way down into the 4th finger on your left hand. The vein was called the "Vena Amoris" which translates to "vein of love." In ancient times it was widely believed that the heart was the center for all our emotions, thus, wearing a ring on the finger that is connected to the heart signified passion, loyalty, love and devotion. Although today we know that that there are veins in every finger that trace back to the heart, we still carry on the tradition of wearing a wedding ring on our left hand, fourth finger. At least we do in the United Staes. But did you know different countries follow different traditions?

For example, Russia, Germany, India and Norway actually wear their wedding rings on the right hand. In some countries like Colombia and Brazil, a promise ring is worn on the right hand only until vows are exchanged, and then the rings are swapped over to the left hand.
Throughout our world's history, wedding and engagement rings have been worn on every finger, including the thumb. But for us, the ancient Roman way has stuck around for millennia.

Today, you can really choose any finger to wear your engagement ring! Hailey Bieber upgraded her oval engagement ring and now wears the original as a pinky ring to keep the sentimental piece with her. You can choose to put your rings on any finger you like, just know that it's still widely acknowledged that a wedding ring is worn on the left hand 4th finger, and if you put it somewhere else, tradition states that not everyone will get the picture.
