Can you tell the difference between lab grown and natural diamonds?

We’ve heard a lot of talk about lab grown diamonds, but are they really different from natural diamonds? And can you tell the difference just by looking at them? When buying an engagement ring, you’ll want to know the differences between the two so you can make an informed decision about which one is right for you.

First and foremost, it’s important to understand that lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to their mined counterparts. This means that they have the same composition, hardness, brilliance, and fire as natural diamonds. The only real way to differentiate them by sight is from a tiny mandatory inscription on the girdle of the diamond which, if lab grown, will contain the words "Laboratory-Grown" followed by the diamond's report number.

One of the biggest advantages of lab-grown diamonds is that they are much more affordable than natural diamonds. Since they are created in a lab, the cost of production is much lower than that of mining, which translates to a lower price tag for the consumer. Additionally, lab-grown diamonds are much more environmentally friendly than natural diamonds, as they do not require destructive mining practices that can harm the earth and its ecosystems.

However, some people prefer natural diamonds because of their rarity and historical significance. Natural diamonds have been prized for centuries and are often passed down as family heirlooms. They also have a certain mystique and allure that lab-grown diamonds may not be able to replicate.

"In the end, you cannot tell the difference between a lab grown diamond and a natural diamond just by looking at them with the naked eye. Not even the best, most highly trained jewelers could, because there is just no difference." - Shannon Baird, Shannon Custom Rings Founder

The decision to purchase a lab-grown or a natural diamond is a personal one and depends on your individual preferences. Regardless of which one you choose, it’s important to know that lab-grown diamonds are just as beautiful, durable, and valuable as natural diamonds, and can be a great choice for those who want a more affordable and environmentally friendly option.
